How old do you have to be to rent a hotel room?

I was wondering the age requirement to rent a hotel room. I thought it was 18, but now I'm hearing 21 a lot. I know that at a cheap hotel they would probably rent it at 18 regardless, but I was looking to stay at a nice hotel. Can anyone help?

Depends entirely where you are, so there is no sensible answer.

In most countries it's 21 but there are exceptions. Generally you will also need a credit card and some form of photo ID.

I'm interested in that as well. My brother once drove up to Maine but couldn't get a hotel room anywhere so he ended up driving back home. I was looking to go on a short trip by myself to a nearby state but I'm concerned about being able to get a room as well. I think it will vary hotel to hotel. I would just call ahead and ask if you know where you want to stay at.
