I just bought my ticket form expedia. I used my debit card (I don't have credit card either) and there was no problem.
I got electronic ticket ,or rather confirmation e-mail that you have to print out and take to the airport.
I have also booked via Expedia with a debit card and had no problems with them accepting my card, though I do normally book with a credit card.
If you are having problems then I would suggest using a pre-paid credit card. These are obtainable from most post-offices etc.
Plane tickets are in the form of E-tickets.
Hotels will also accept any major credit or debit cards. Just be aware that they will put a "hold" on some of the funds in your bank account.
For example: If the hotel room costs you $200 for the entire stay, they will take that $200 and they will also "hold" (for sake of argument) a further $125 from your account, to cover any damages etc but you will get this $125 back once you check out.
It is the same procedure with car rentals too.
Online travel purchases need to be made on a credit card, not a debit card.
Also, the tickets are called e-tickets (electronic tickets). You print them out at the kiosk at the airport.
You'll need a credit card to book through Expedia or Orbitz.
