What is appropriate for tipping at a hotel?

Someone informed me that you should not only tip the bell hop and cleaning person, but also the front desk at your hotel. What would be the appropiate tip to give them. Should I tip them when I first greet them or wait until after they check us in.

Hey check out this website it has the answer to your question http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16258235/

this depends entirely on what country you are in. In the USA it is customary to tip (what seems to me) EVERYONE. In australia tipping is rare and I only do it in a good restaurant when the service was exceptional.

Try looking it up in a lonely planet guide for the country your visiting, or just google 'tipping customs in xxx'

In all my travels, I have never tipped a

Hotel employee who works at the Front Desk. They do not expect to be tipped.

Bellboys and Doormen get tipped all the time. Housekeeping personnel get tipped some of the time.
