What part of Paris to hotel in for a weekend in Paris?

I am surprising my wife with a weekend in Paris. Can anyone recommend the best area of Paris to look for Hotel accommodation in? Obviously only there for a few days want to make the most of the typical touristy things. I want to stay in a good area, preferably an area that is safe to walk around in at night! Advise about what areas not to stay in would be good too! Thanks alot.

First things first - Paris is a surprisingly small city in tourist terms. Although the suburbs are extensive the city centre doesn't stretch out far and, unlike London, is very easily walkable. I say that because it means the location of your hotel isn't that important because you won't be far from everything anyway.

That said each of the districts has a different feel to it. Everyone has their own preferences and here are mine.

My favourite part is the 6th district which includes the Latin Quarter, Jardin de Luxembourg and the Village of St. Germain-des-pres . The streets here are charming, with lots of quaint shops and delicious patisseries plus there are loads of museums on your doorstep here.

I also really like the 4th district home of the Pompidou Centre and the two islands (Ile St. Louis and Ile de La Cite) where Notre Dame is located.

As far as hotels are concerned neither of these are the cheapest parts of town. I've included a couple of links to Skoosh so you can plot the hotels near both of these areas. I hope you have a great time out there. I'm off to Paris myself today.

Hi i have stayed in 3 different areas of Paris and my favourite one was opera which i visited in July.

The hotel we stayed in was the Golden Tulip opera de noalles (check it out on trip advisor) its located 2 mins walk from the famoursL'opera Garnier and is close to restaurant and Lopera, Auber and Quatre September metro stops. You can walk to the Louvre in 10-15 mins. and Galleries lafayette in about 10 mins

The hotel is small but modern and the staff very attentive, its also a great place for exploring paris from. We walked around at night and event got lost, there are always plenty of people around and we felt very safe, the area is oftern referred to as the grand boulevards.

Enjoy your trip.
