While Amarvilas (The Oberoi Resort) is just 600 metres form Taj mahal and is simply outstanding, I still feel its not worth it to spend that kind of money..
I would recommend The Gateway Hotel (Taj Group of Hotels) which has rooms that provide breathtaking views of Taj Mahal and is comparatively cheaper.. You can visit www.thegatewayhotels.com for more information.

Oh yes The Oberoi is worth it beyond all words - but make sure you get a room with a view on one of the higher floors with a balcony. Yes, I felt incredibly guilty spending that much money in such a poor country (relatively speaking to Western world) but in terms of the experience that I had it was out of this world. Have dinner on your balcony delivered to you (don't eat at the restaurant downstairs) and marvel at the enigma in front of you. Breath-taking. Make sure you are up and out at the gates of the Taj Mahal by sun-up (hotel will advise) so that you are first in. Do it - you will never regret this splurge:)

You are right Hotel Amar Vilas A Oberoi is best option to have a room with view of Taj Mahal and yes its bit costlier also.
I will recomond you Hotel Taj Khema a govt Hotel Very close to Taj Mahal and it wont cost you either.
