If the "Stay Hotel" in Los Angeles in a place that is safe enough to come an go even at night?

I am considering staying at the Stay Hotel on the edge of Skid Row in Los Angeles in an upcoming trip with my girlfriend. We weren't going to rent a car, but planning on taking public transportation to places while we were there. Would it be a safe enough place to come and go to? We wouldn't walk around skid row, and we could even take taxis to union station or wherever.

Downtown Los Angeles is not like downtown in other places. They are currently trying to make it look better. Right now there are bums everywhere and not savory people. Downtown L.A. disgusts me frankly. I don't know where you heard about this place or if you are trying to save money. I suggest looking up a Ramada Inn or something in hollywood, santa monica, or maybe near venice beach.

I don't agree with the other answers. Most people from L.A. (esp. the burbs) don't know downtown and their perceptions are based on the past. Much has changed and this area is just as safe as any other - plus you have easy access to the subway. Friends of mine stayed at Stay before a loved it. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20081121235959AAgqcFv&kid=IMNPDDD4IjZzuF2m_3c4&s=comm&date=2009-02-01+12%3A47%3A33&.crumb=

No way. Daytime, yes, but not late at night.

In Los Angeles, there is a great divide between people who are comfortable with downtown and those who are not. I am a downtown person. For ten years, I had my architectural firm in the world-famous Bradbury Building at Third and Broadway, near this location, and then for another ten in the artist district, also nearby. Basically I love downtown, am intrepid about it, and am thrilled to see it coming back.

BUT... for tourists who are not familiar with its ways, I have to say no. And as you travel around LA, as you would in any city worldwide, mind your wallet!

No freakin' way.

Downtown LA is not like downtowns of other cities. Skid Row is a REALLY dangerous are at night. Please consider somewhere else.
