How old do you have to be to rent a hotel room in Canada?

My friends and I want to take a road trip to Canada, and we weren't sure of the rules. How old do you have to be to rent a hotel room there? And also, we are all 18 with one younger person who's only 17. Will they be able to cross the border with ease or are we going to have a problem? Thanks for your help and answers.
