What would you consider a decent rate at a regular hotel?

What would you think would be a decent rate if you where just looking for a room for the night? Also, what would you consider a decent rate for a luxury four star hotel?

It totally depends on the city and the day of the week. You'd be lucky to get a room with a private bath in NYC during the week for the price of a 4 star room in Dallas on a weekend. A good way to see if you have an acceptable rate is to compare to the US government permissible reimbursement rates in each city. A 4 star room would probably be higher but that also depends on the day of the week you are booking. Most business hotels will offer a discount for weekend nights and most resort hotels have cheaper rates in the middle of the week. It helps to call the hotel directly to get the best rate instead of booking online or through a reservation 800 number.
